Missouri House Republicans want to have it both ways when it comes to making healthcare accessible to everyone. First they made huge cuts to Medicaid, then they congratulated themselves on restoring some people, now they’re refusing to fund those gains.

New! To get the whole story, read Pro-Vote's Report, "House of Hypocrites - Round Two" (May 2008).

This report takes a detailed look at the voting records of members of the General Assembly and raises questions about their priorities. As the name suggests, the report draws its inspiration from the 2004 St. Louis Post Dispatch editorial, which drew statewide attention.

Billions for Iraq - - A Veto for Children's Health Care

On January 23rd, 2008, Congress had a clear choice: Stand with the President or Provide Health Insurance for Children. Congress fell just 15 "YES" votes short of overriding President Bush’s veto of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). Here is how Missouri’s Congressional Delegation voted:

Yes: No:

Rep William Lacy Clay (D-1)

Rep Todd Akin (R-2)
Rep Russ Carnahan (D-3) Rep Sam Graves (R-6)
Rep Ike Skelton (D-4) Rep Roy Blunt (R-7)
Rep Emmanuel Cleaver (D-5) Rep Kenny Hulshof (R-9)
Rep Jo Ann Emerson (R-8)

The Democratic Leadership has vowed to send another bill funding SCHIP to the President's desk and Congress will have another opportunity to stand up for America's priorities.

On October 16, Pro-Vote held vigils for SCHIP, the State Children's Health Insurance Program. We pressured U.S. Reps Graves and Hulshof to vote to override President Bush's veto of the $35 billion SCHIP expansion passed by Congress, but both voted lockstep with President Bush. Below are links to coverage of the events and brief descriptions.

Missourians in Kansas City turn out to the Vigils for SCHIP on October 16th.

Nearly 700,000 Missourians have no health insurance, including 106,000 children. In 2005, Missouri politicians continued to give away millions of dollars in tax breaks for insurance companies and corporations, while eliminating health coverage for 100,000 Missourians and cutting health services for over 300,000 more! Nobody in Missouri voted for that. We need to set this right and ensure that health care for children and families becomes a priority this year!
