May 2007: Legislature passes Governor Blunt's flawed health care plan MO HealthNet.

Click here to see the final vote cast by both your State Senator and Representative in the battle against MO HealthNet (SB 577) on May 18, 2007.

If you don't know your State Senator or State Representative, click here.

Thank you to the hundreds of people who contated their legislators and urged them to vote "NO!" on SB 577 that has created MO HealthNet.

Thank you to all legislators who stood up for a progressive vision of Missouri and voted against MO HealthNet.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

We call on Governor Blunt and the Legislature to:

  1. Guarantee quality affordable health coverage for every Missourian.
  2. Restore health coverage and services to those who were cut in 2005.
  3. Make health care for Missouri's families a priority in 2007.

Protect and Restore HealthCare in Missouri

Click here to check out our new report "Living in the Red: Medical Debt and Housing Security in Missouri."

Quick Facts from the Report:

  • 53% of those surveyed said they had Medical Debt from unpaid Medical bills.
  • 52% of those who reported Medical Debt had Health insurance at the time the Medical debt was incurred.
  • 31% of those surveyed with Medical Debt said the debut resulted in difficulty in making mortgage/rent payments or getting housing loans to buy a home.

Nearly 700,000 Missourians have no health insurance, including 106,000 children. In 2005, Missouri politicians continued to give away millions of dollars in tax breaks for insurance companies and corporations, while eliminating health coverage for 100,000 Missourians and cutting health services for over 300,000 more! Nobody in Missouri voted for that. We need to set this right and ensure that health care for children and families becomes a priority this year!

Missouri Governor Matt Blunt and the Republican General Assembly aren’t the only ones looking to slash Medicaid coverage for the elderly, children, people with disabilities and working families. Congress is working on a bill that would take more than $200 million more out of our state’s Medicaid insurance program. The federal reconciliation bill would cut more than $50 billion from critical services that benefit students, children, and seniors and at the same time hand over $56 billion in tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans.

Pro Vote is working as part of the national Emergency Campaign for America’s Priorities (ECAP) to pressure Congress to vote against more cuts to critical services like healthcare and education. ECAP is a national coalition active in 35 states aimed at pressuring Congressional members like Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson in Southeast Missouri to support the priorities of working families over tax breaks for the rich.

The final version of this bill passed in the Senate in mid December by a margin of one vote (51-50). Now, we have one more chance to stop cuts to critical services like student loans, Medicaid and TANF by pressuring our Missouri delegation members to represent the interests of Missouri’s working families instead of rich millionaires who don’t need more tax breaks.

Pro Vote will continue working with ECAP nationally and with our activists and partners in the state to hold our representatives accountable to our priorities and to organize resistance to cuts in services that hurt the working families, children and seniors of Missouri.
